KEY TAKEAWAY: “That’s a really high LDL,” according to Dr. Topol, a cardiologist at the Scripps Research Institute. “We’re talking about a 70-plus-year-old man who is obese and doesn’t exercise. Just looking at the lab value, you would raise a big red flag.” He added: “I would never use the words ‘excellent health.’ How you could take these indices and say excellent health? That is completely contradicted.” But the bigger danger is the message this sends to the public at large.
Dr. Jackson, the President’s physician, said he is pressing Mr. Trump — who at 6-foot-3 and 239 pounds is just below the official label of obese — to eat better and abandon his largely sedentary life for one that includes exercise. The problem of course is that Trump has said many times that he “hates exercise”.
According to Slate “right now Americans are not as healthy as they could or should be, in large part due to the obesity epidemic. Obesity rates have more than doubled in the past 30 years . Two-thirds of adults and one-third of children are now overweight or obese. Obesity is one of the biggest health crises the country has ever faced, and we’re at a crossroads for how we deal with it and where it will take our economy”.
Obesity is among the biggest drivers of preventable diseases and health care costs in the United States. Estimates for these costs range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion annually, with job absenteeism related to obesity costing another $4.3 billion annually.
So here we have a senior medical professional telling the world that “trump has good genes” and that despite his obesity (there are people who believe his reported weight is inaccurate and is much higher) we will just prescribe a higher dose of Crestor and tell him to exercise. Once again “treat the condition, not the person”.
This is a dangerous message to send to the public and the AMA as well as other groups should be speaking out with a very loud voice. The AMA needs to get aggressive in tackling obesity and it needs to happen NOW.
