Happy July 4th. Our democracy is slipping away

The Hill reported yesterday that 71% of voters don’t want Joe Biden to run for President again. Of course, we don’t know who they would vote for if it were Biden against someone like Ron DeSantis, but it’s a good indication of how voters feel.

I don’t think anyone can overestimate the damage the Republican party has done to this country. Their beliefs are viewed positively by a minority in this country, yet one million voters just registered as Republicans. It’s difficult to comprehend such ignorance.

Mitch McConnell successfully installed an ultra-conservative Supreme Court that has eroded our freedoms and endangered our lives. Allowing New York City residents to carry firearms is a recipe for more murders.

I’m a history buff and have read about the founding fathers. When you read about people like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, you begin to understand that they weren’t perfect and, like all of us, had many faults. During the Constitutional Convention, Mr. Adams and Franklin had to work hard to get the delegates aligned to vote “yes.

The 4th amendment says, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” Yet SCOTUS has permitted some law enforcement organizations to ignore the fourth amendment.

As the January 6th committee lays out a frightening scenario of Trump and his associates' actions, Democrats expect the public to be outraged. The Republican propaganda machine is in full swing. The country is yelling about Roe V. Wade being overturned but will voters take their anger out on Republicans or send more Republicans to Congress?

High gas prices, inflation, shrinkflation, low car inventory, COVID’s possible reoccurrence, recession fears, companies are starting to lay off people, 401K’s taking a beating all add to a sour mood that voters tend to take out on incumbents.

The sad aspect of this is that Republicans, who have no plans and want to bring religion back into politics, are winning the war of words. Voters should be outraged at what happened on and around January 6th, but too many see it as a “witch hunt” even though it's been Republicans who are testifying. One Republican is even running commercials about “gunning down RHINOs.

Happy July 4th. I hope we dare to bring justice and common sense back into vogue.
