MAGA supporters define stupidity
Jonathan Chait has a theory about why Trump’s success took him and other pundits by surprise: “The Republican Party turns out to be filled with idiots. Far more of them than anybody expected.” But this idea is singularly unhelpful. It actually helps absolve Trumpkins of responsibility: Idiots are usually not held accountable for their acts.
President Joe Biden’s decision to cancel the planned Keystone XL oil pipeline, which was not in operation, did not cause the recent increases in U.S. gasoline prices but don’t tell that to MAGA supporters.
In the local paper, news feeds across the country the comments sections are filled with “Let’s go Brandon” and “Thanks Sleepy Joe” as MAGA supporters blame the current administration for everything from high prices to oil company profiteering.
What’s making gas prices soar?
“Russia’s invasion and the responding escalating series of financial sanctions by the U.S. and its allies have given the global oil market the jitters,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a statement last week. The spike in gas prices is “a grim reminder that events on the far side of the globe can have a ripple effect for American consumers,” Gross added.
But while the crisis in Ukraine is having an immediate impact, Vincent said it’s hardly the sole factor. “We’ve had a supply-and-demand imbalance for a while — and it will remain regardless of whether this conflict goes away,” he said.
As it has in every industry, the pandemic has caused staffing issues at refineries. And there have been outages — including a fire at a Marathon Petroleum plant in Louisiana.
A colder winter across North America also led to higher demand for heating oil, and pandemic-driven online shopping has taxed diesel, which fuels all those trucks.
“The fundamental fact is that [the] market is well undersupplied in 2022,” Credit Suisse’s Manav Gupta wrote in an analysis, according to Barron’s. “Even if geopolitical tensions ease over the next few weeks, near-term high oil prices are here to stay.”
Then there is America’s love affair with gas-guzzling SUVs which usually get terrible MPG numbers.
So what do MAGA supporters do? They take their huge trucks to Washington DC with Trump flags everywhere. It’s hard to understand that level of stupidity.
Rather than recoiling from the murderous treachery of Putin’s brutal invasion of sovereign Ukraine, Trump seems absolutely giddy about the Russian autocrat’s cleverness, calling Putin a “genius” and describing the invasion as “a wonderful move.”
Trump is appealing to the aggrieved privilege of well-to-do white Republicans who feel threatened by America’s changing demographics and challenges to the traditional racial hierarchy in the age of Obama.
America IS changing. The country’s demographics are shifting, like it or not. We once embraced change but the entrenched MAGA people don’t want change. They don’t want facts either which is why all of us need to do our part to use the power of our vote to send most Republicans packing.
