Republicans stepped into it.
No matter how they try to spin it, voters know that they are responsible for overturning Roe V. Wade. McConnell would not allow Obama to appoint a replacement to SCOTUS and Trump-appointed justice’s who lied and are unqualified. It also might be the worst news Republicans can get as they head into the 2022 midterm elections. An overwhelming majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal in at least some circumstances, if not all, while less than 20 percent believe in the harsh restrictions; Republicans are poised to deliver in many conservative states.
It gets worse. After supporting the Trump tax cuts, the deficit ballooned even before COVID, and now Republicans want to cut Medicare and social security while raising taxes on the middle class.
According to Scott, “all Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently, over half of Americans pay no income tax.” Of course, other Republicans aren’t on board with Scott’s plan because they know it’s political suicide.
As soon as SCOTUS overturns Roe V. Wade, red states will rush to restrict or abolish abortion even though most states support a women’s right to choose.
The Republicans are trying to distance themselves from the decision and show outrage that the decision was leaked while staying silent about the January 6th violence. Senate GOP Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refused to engage in questions about the draft ruling and what it might mean for the future and instead focused on criticizing the leaking of the draft Supreme Court opinion.
Republicans are so batshit crazy that a bill in Louisiana that is working its way through the House would make those involved in an abortion — including patients and doctors — subject to homicide charges. House Bill 813, which claims life should be protected upon fertilization, cleared the House.
There are still a lot of issues. Did Kavanaugh and Barrett lie, and will there be consequences if they did? Will women mobilize and send Republicans packing, and will blue states offer abortion tourism to red-state residents?
Another day and another demonstration of how out of touch Republicans are.
